Auckland's Public Transport Set for Major Overhaul with City Rail Link Opening in 2026

Auckland is set for a major leap in public transport as the City Rail Link (CRL) prepares to launch in 2026, promising faster and more direct travel across the city.

With three brand-new stations—Maungawhau, Karanga-a-Hape, and Te Waihorotiu—plus upgrades to Waitematā (Britomart), the CRL will enable trains to travel seamlessly through the city centre.

The introduction of an East-West Line will connect Swanson to Manukau, streamlining cross-city journeys and reducing travel times significantly.

For example, commuters from Henderson to Wellesley Street will save about 24 minutes.

Alongside these rail enhancements, the Eastern Busway—linking Panmure and Botany—will open in 2027, improving bus connectivity for East Auckland.

Auckland Transport is also simplifying fares and expanding contactless payment options, making journeys smoother and more accessible for all residents.

Auckland's Tourism Sector Seeks Revival Amidst Post-Pandemic Challenges

Auckland’s CBD is navigating a pivotal moment as it recovers from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourism.

Despite world-class infrastructure and a dynamic cultural scene, the city is still working to regain pre-pandemic visitor numbers.

Auckland Airport saw a 17% rise in annual passenger numbers, reaching 18.5 million by June 2024, but this is still below previous highs.

New investments, such as the New Zealand International Convention Centre opening in February 2026 and the City Rail Link project, promise to boost tourism and connectivity.

Major events, including P!nk’s sold-out March concerts, have drawn thousands from outside the city, benefitting local businesses and accommodations.

However, proposed Auckland Council budget cuts threaten crucial tourism promotion funding.

Industry leaders urge ongoing support for marketing and infrastructure to secure Auckland’s future as a leading destination.
