Auckland's Public Transport Set for Major Overhaul with City Rail Link Opening in 2026

New 'Trains and Rapid Buses' Map Reveals Enhanced Connectivity and Faster Journeys

Aucklanders are on the brink of a transformative shift in public transportation as the City Rail Link (CRL) prepares to open in 2026.

The recently unveiled 'Trains and Rapid Buses' map showcases the extensive improvements poised to redefine travel across the city.

Dean Kimpton, Auckland Transport's Chief Executive, emphasized the widespread impact of the CRL, stating, "Many people don’t realize that City Rail Link benefits all of Auckland and the whole public transport network."

The CRL introduces three new central city stations: Maungawhau, Karanga-a-Hape, and Te Waihorotiu, alongside enhancements to the existing Waitematā Station (Britomart).

These developments are set to revolutionize the network by enabling trains to traverse the city center directly, thereby reducing travel times and increasing service frequency.

Notably, the new East-West Line will merge the former Eastern and Western Lines, offering a seamless cross-city service from Swanson to Manukau.

This integration is expected to significantly cut travel times; for instance, journeys from Henderson to Wellesley Street are projected to be approximately 24 minutes faster.

In addition to rail enhancements, the rapid bus network is undergoing substantial upgrades.

The Eastern Busway, connecting Panmure to Botany, is slated for completion by 2027, providing a dedicated corridor for buses and improving connectivity in East Auckland.

Furthermore, Auckland Transport is simplifying its fare structure across buses, trains, and ferries, effective February 2, 2025.

This revision aims to make the system more user-friendly, though it includes a modest fare increase to offset rising operational costs.

To enhance payment convenience, contactless payment options, including debit and credit cards, as well as mobile payment platforms like Apple Pay and Google Pay, were introduced in November 2024.

These options complement the existing AT HOP cards, offering passengers greater flexibility.

As Auckland approaches the CRL's opening, residents can anticipate a more efficient, interconnected, and accessible public transport system, marking a significant milestone in the city's urban development.
